And now for today’s “new cars suck”. New Toyota Highlanders have these wheels. They look pretty sweet. However what you don’t know is that the whole face of the wheel is a very well-disguised plastic cover that is integrated into the wheel itself, NOT a removable hub cap. This means if the plastic ever gets cracked, say, by a pot hole or poor-quality tire changing machinery, the new wheel from Toyota will cost you....seven hundred dollars. For one wheel. New cars suck. That is all.

New *Toyotas*.

If you think Toyota is the only automaker doing stupid stuff like this you are very much lying to yourself.

Ford has done it for years as well.

Clad wheels!
Efficient wheel shapes tend to be ugly. Pretty wheel shapes tend to be heavy and expensive.
Solution: Make ugly efficient wheel, cover it with pretty plastic cover! No Toyota buyer can tell the difference!
Problem: They crack. Next solution: Chip off all the plastic for the ultimate in function over form!!!

I’m with sm70. new toyotas. (or rather, new cheap cars)
Our lexus has legit alloys, not some plastic clad BS.
SOURCE: I broke one -.-’ Belive me, it wasnt plastic covered metal.

True, but Toyota right now is the only company that doesn’t make a single model I’d buy. Nothing against Toyota specifically, but they all bore me to death, apart from the Cruiser which is insanely expensive.
I’m aware that there are lots of cost cutting features and design flaws on modern cars, but a) there’s still plenty to like about them, and b) it’s not unique to new cars.

My Dodge has a similar setup. It’s a 2008. 72,000 miles and plenty of potholes. 20 inch wheel with a 255/50 profile tire. No issues yet..... My wife ran over quite a large chunk of metal in the roadway annihilating a tire once and the wheel was fine.... I would think delamination might pose a larger problem with age....

Toyota. Let’s go places…miserably.

Toyota’s are closer to a sewing machine on wheels than a car...

Yep, pretty much anytime you see “chrome” wheels on a non-luxury car they’re built this way.

Chrysler has always been the worst offender of this. Chrome-clad for every single vehicle in their lineup. Check out the back of the their rims and it will be a nightmare just to look at.
As for GM, they’ve done it to but not nearly as much as other companies have. My ‘03 Yukon doesn't have the plastic cover over them. Only plastic on my wheels are the covers for the lug nuts.

HOLY CHRIST, I had no idea the Land Cruiser was over $80,000. How the hell can they justify that?

A small but very dedicated and very rich following. They are to old money what the Mercedes G Class is to new money.

Probably wouldn’t ever buy one. Too much other stuff available.

The only similar vehicle I can think of is the X-Terra, which I would buy because manual.

I’d take a Wrangler first, but honestly none of the vehicles in that class are likely something I’d buy.

Nope. I respect them, but I’d never buy one. Lexus is a different story, but Toyota/Scion doesn’t do anything that tickles my fancy right now.

Yes, Nissan.
